The day waistcoat introduces a tailored note into everyday dressing. In the I was a Sari collection, this sleeveless piece is designed to add structure without feeling formal. Clean lines, thoughtful proportions, and upcycled sari fabrics come together in a garment that feels refined yet easy, offering a subtle balance between sharp tailoring and expressive material.
A day waistcoat is a sleeveless, tailored garment designed to be worn as a lightweight layer. Defined by its front button closure and structured cut, it adds shape and clarity to an outfit without the weight of outerwear. At I was a Sari, the day waistcoat is crafted from repurposed sari textiles, giving this classic form a distinctive, one-of-a-kind character.
The day waistcoat is designed to follow the body with intention rather than rigidity. Its tailored silhouette offers definition through the torso, while the sleeveless cut keeps the fit light and adaptable. Front buttons allow the waistcoat to be worn open or closed, making it easy to adjust the look depending on styling and occasion.
Each day waistcoat begins with a sari that already exists. These pre-loved fabrics are carefully selected and transformed by women artisans in Mumbai, extending their life and reducing textile waste. Produced in limited quantities, every piece reflects an ethical approach to fashion that values craftsmanship, reuse, and mindful production over mass manufacturing.
Designed for versatility, the day waistcoat works across different moments of the day. It can be layered over simple tops, dresses, or shirts to add structure, or worn as a statement piece on its own. The tailored shape makes it suitable for both relaxed and more considered looks, depending on how it’s styled.
Because each piece is made from a different sari, no two day waistcoats are ever the same. Variations in colour, texture, and pattern are an integral part of the design, reflecting a circular philosophy that values individuality over uniformity. The result is a waistcoat designed to be worn often, styled intuitively, and kept over time.

Between two sizes? Go by your chest measurement first for tops, or hips for bottoms, see the notes below.
Use a soft tape, wear light clothing, and keep the tape level all the way around.
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, level across the back. Keep it snug, not tight, and read the measurement where the tape meets.
Find your natural waistline, usually the narrowest point of your torso. Don't hold your stomach in, keep the tape level and comfortably snug.
Stand with feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat, straight and level front to back.
