The belted shirts in the I was a Sari collection reinterpret everyday dressing through conscious design and one-of-a-kind aesthetics. Crafted from upcycled sari fabrics, each shirt combines expressive prints, soft textures, and thoughtful construction. The integrated belt allows the silhouette to be shaped or left relaxed, offering flexibility in styling depending on mood and occasion.
Every belted shirt is handmade in Mumbai by women artisans using pre-loved saris that already carry their own history. By working exclusively with existing textiles, I was a Sari reduces textile waste while supporting ethical, small-scale production and preserving traditional craftsmanship. No mass production, no replicas — just carefully reimagined garments designed to last beyond trends.
Designed for versatility, belted shirts transition effortlessly between workdays, weekends, travel, and slower moments. Lightweight fabrics, breathable fits, and adjustable belts make each piece comfortable across seasons. Worn as a shirt dress, layered over trousers, or styled open as a light outer layer, the belted shirt adapts naturally to different lifestyles.
Each belted shirt is defined by the sari it originates from, resulting in natural variations in colour, pattern, and texture. No two pieces are ever the same — a deliberate choice that celebrates individuality and circular fashion. By transforming existing fabrics into contemporary belted shirts, I was a Sari demonstrates that sustainability and design can coexist without compromise.

All measurements are body girth, in centimetres, with 1cm of ease already built in.

Between two sizes? Go by your chest measurement first for tops, or hips for bottoms, see the notes below.
Use a soft tape, wear light clothing, and keep the tape level all the way around.
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, level across the back. Keep it snug, not tight, and read the measurement where the tape meets.
Find your natural waistline, usually the narrowest point of your torso. Don't hold your stomach in, keep the tape level and comfortably snug.
Stand with feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat, straight and level front to back.
